Way Up North - Selangor

Hunt for good makan!!!!

In life we inadvertently execute many small actions daily to get us going in life. That habit or experience as you may called it is again repeated, when we were travelling. What are trying to say?

We rush through our schedule we needed to rest or find food! We stopped and we ate. Sometimes we target places known for good food but most time - not. We just ate as what was available.

That's all the niceties. Environment wise and setting, nothing adverse. Then comes the mundane part. Food one the menu is the same as those normally served by most restaurant, Niche is the impressive menu had prices for the full range of River Fishes. Whether these are constantly available or not for that day, It varies. Prices not too expensive but leaning towards a premium. Very well organized joint with little chances of making complaints.

Selayang

1.A very well known and popular Restaurant

Signature dishes are Fried noodle - Cantonese style, Indian style and porridge. Went on to serve steam fishes and noodle done with Udang Gala

2. Pan Heong

Food has good taste and prices competitive. Lately the novelty on the decline, gone are the crowd that used to wait outside for seats and given numbered reservations

Rawang

3. Yong Tau Foo & Steamboat Restaurant

Was there again to visit the shop recently. This time again but the shop opens punctually at noon and we were to early. So we left without waiting despite of the distances we had traveled. There are several shops in Rawang with the same simple name Yong Tau Foo. This particular shop is differentiated by the word "steamboat". The Yong Tao Foo dish they served I must say is "so so" lah. Niche from this stall would be the is the Clay pot, deep fried Elephant Yam. It is very good

Serendah

4.  Yee Kee Coffee shop

Best coffee in town if done by the father. The shop is now runs by the brother and sister. Sometime as shown in this picture the mother would offer some help

5. Our "Pit Stop" in our fortnightly pilgrimage to temple.

Here is the "karaoke gang" who had joined us on one of these trips

 6. Coffee shop with a couple of Stalls

Of the few stalls, curry mee would be No. 1 our choice

 Ulu Yam Baharu

7. WK Restaurant

Let's move on to the next town! An age old restaurant hailed as Curry Fish Head restaurant. Taste is good and prices, really value for money. Very well known among travelers to Genting Highlands and a "must stop" for visitor from the north on their way to Genting Casino and on their way down trip going back home. Good crowd most of the times.

 8. The Gang Of Four Lunch place

Lately, more restaurants in Ulu Yam Baharu sprung up. making the place Ulu Yam Lama and Baharu both, weekend favorite destinations. The locals, hardly eats here are going elsewhere for their fresh taste

 hailed

Ulu Yam Lama

9.  Home to the famous black Loh Mee

Another small settlement 10 km away from Ulu Yam Baharu is the original Ulu Yam township. This is the place where the real McCoy Guan Kee would be. Would internet, better publicity, more lookalike shops offering the same dishes are getting more popular.

10. Fighting back with big banner

The banner in it this shop didn't claim to be the best but the oldest establishment. Yes, now I can see that crowd are learning. Loh Mee does not originate from Ulu Yam but specifically in Ulu Yam Lama and this shop.

11. Loh Mee

The weekends crowds are flocking back to Ulu Yam Lama

Kuala Kubu Baharu

12. Noodle shop - Yew Kee

It is a coffee stall in the town's allocated small hawkers centre. They only open for breakfast. If you need Wan Tan Mee, then, this is the place. On our way to Frasers Hills, we do not make detour to drive into town but went straight in the direction of the Selangor Dam. On the way we have other options the KKB New Village. So, no reason to choose this Yew Kee.

13. Yew Kee Coffee Stall

After reading so much about food and weekend crowd. Now this is one place that the locals gather here. Must be the best that the town could offer.

14. Hai Kee Food stall

This is a Teochew Restaurant offering home cooked food. yes, it is very good. On our way down from Frasers and if the timing is right, we would have our meals here. The taste is good and prices very competitive,

#17

15. A must drop-by place for KKB

The house specialty is Kaya puff and Butter sponge cake. very traditional and authentic

16. The owner - Miss Wun

A very warm and sincere people. Proud Hainanese

17. Another shop to attract

Mr Tan, a friendly guy is a ardent photographers. Typical Hainanese snack bar type hop of the 1960's

18. Mr Tan shop. Hainanese restaurant

Usual Pork chop, Hainanese Lam Mee Noodles etc

Kalumpang

19. An old Mining town

I am sure the name sounds familiar, but not many people knows where the place would be. This was the town where my mother grew up with. Now descendants from her cousin still live there. I love passing by here

20. A very deserted township

A single road, one row of shops, only one shop opened for business but with no signage. Right opposite these shops is a large modern style police station.

21. Kalumpang New Village

No! It is not called "New Village" - but Kampung Sejantung. This is the settlement where all activities in the vicinity are taking place

Tanjong Malim

22. Reaching our target - the Fu Man restaurant

Unique culture here! The doors of the restaurant remained closed and opened exactly at noon. Likewise, the locals who are accustomed will be streaming in at the same time. As seen in this picture, it is almost half full, five minutes after the doors opened.

23. Looking out

That's the main road, the North-South Highway 1 that bypasses Tanjong Malim town. We too did not go into town and had no reason to..

24. Picture what we ate!

We had this Kong-Nam Noodle - first class very well prepared

25. Picture what we ate!

Their signature dish that we came for Deep fried salted Pork Belly. Yes, rather unique, good taste. Goes with a chilli sauce. Too dry for me

26. PMixed Veggie

Selection of ingredient - good and plenty of "wok Hei". Another thumbs up.

27. Fu Man Restaurant

This restaurant is seating right at the border - but within on the Perak State side

28. The much raved about "Pow" shop of Tanjong Malim

It is Hainanese operated.

29. It is halal

It.s halal. Attracting lots of Muslim patronage

30. A biscuit shop

Its like a supermarket of Tit-bits. Wide ranges of sweets, snacks and pastries. Some they did them in the shop with many sourced from outside

We had a good meal in our last stop - Fu Man, satisfied with the taste and price.

Would we go back to this same place if given the opportunity. Frankly the answer is "NO"! Nothing to imply the the place is not worth going to. It is my lifestyle and preferences. I normally patronizes simple stalls with basic offerings. I am a person who loves nature. So this restaurant in Tanjong Malim is offering goodies in a far a far way destination. Happy with what the world could offer! Simple food. The nice and luxurious things what this world could pamper others with, either I can get it nearby my house or I am out.
