Penang Trip

Waterfront & Beaches

We do not have much chance to see Penang that often Now after a two years lock down and separation, it is a good excuse for us to have a look at the situation on the Island. Of course, the various notable spots would be good bench mark  and for us to guage first hand how the situation would look like. Just by merely passing through we could see only the physical aspect but that is good enough. Calm our feelings that we have not seen all these places for long time and now that special effort

1. The famed Chew's Jetty

Here the color of the letters did not come out well in daylight. I think it is LED lighting meant for night display. Anyway when we were passing by in mid day situation, won't expect much activity either.

2. Tun Raja Uda Ferry Pier

More a major terminal and starting point for stage busses plying Georgetown area. Foot passenger traffic using the cross channel ferries much reduced. Place looks deserted as well. It is called "Rapid Ferry Pier"

3. Church Street Pier

Oh yes, very nice structure indeed, got me curious, Obviously a show piece so I did some checking up.

4.  Swettenham Pier

This place should have some activity. Not when we passed by that day and time. From our condo, we could see that the "Cruise to Nowhere" leaving at night and returning in the mid morning. That would be the time, we should get to see people moving about this pier.

5. Swettenham Pier

Another shot wider angle of activities around the place

 6. Esplanade under renovation

We came in the year 2000, work was going on now 2 years later, WIP was again on

 7. Swettenham Pier Marina

Yes, we could see the Star Cruise vessel parked

#9

 8. Cruise Ship in Marina

This is the small vessel for that "Cruise to Nowhere"

 9. Fort Cornwalis

The main entrance into the Fort Cornwalis proper

10.  Light street Convent

Cursory picture of the Light Street Convent and also in the danger of being abandoned

 11. E & O Hotel

Likewise the E&O Hotel. Survived the Covid lockdown

 12. Boon Siew Bungalow in town

This house in town. Still kept in respectable condition

13. Gurney Drive beach front - all fenced Oh No!

What a pathetic sight? The whole beach area blocked by a belt of Mangrove forest. I do know! To confirm that there is no more of the old view from here. Pity the operators of those Beach front food outlet and luxury condo owners. No more beach front drive. Suddenly gone!

14. Sunrise at Gurney

For nostalgic reason, we love to have a picture from this iconic Sunrise building

#17

16. Junction at Fettes Park

Likewise the Fatty Loh Chicken Rice do bring back lots of fond memories

17. Entrance to Strait Quay Complex

This is a new place place we once stayed couple of years back. Just before the outbreak of Covid 19

18. The Chinese Swimming Club

This is a historical building too.I had been inside when I was a kid, now many years after that the name still rings and so would this picture brings.

19.The Penang Swimming Club

This place is so remote and out bound to people like us in the early years

20. "Welcome" to Hollywood

The place where high end good food was served. Glad that it is still operating. See that it needs the word "Hainan" to lure customers. Doesn't every body in Penang know what "Hollywood Restaurant" was all about? Oh! No! Not the new set.

21. Boon Siew's beach house

The view for this house is simply fantastic

22. Miami Beach

Given a new look but with so much urbanization, that rustic looks gone. The place is no longer romantic. Despite of being modernized and given a new look

22. Miami Beach

Maybe the place with the lack of place for stopping and the noise of the non stop traffic. It definitely is not that secluded then besides a busy thoroughfare. One thing for sure, can't even stop for a while leave alone finding a place to park your car.

23 Moonlight Bay

Wow! Upgraded too with proper signage and sheltered stairway

24. At Last- Another iconic place - The Rasa Sayang Hotel

Glad that the Hotel s still operating

25. Golden Sands

This hotel no more in use but still? See the picture. Not so lucky. How on earth they built a surau at its frontage?

26. Lone Pine looks luckier

Oh! It is still still there

27. The slip road beside beside Lone Pine gone!

For public beach in Penang? This is the new parking area for Long Beach

28. Lover's Isle

Instead of seeing the beautiful view of the Rock in the sea! These two tiny buildings are the sight. Another scenic view for the Round Island trip - Gone

29.Teluk Bahang -End of the Road

This is the end of the beach road for Penang. Turning right at the round -about will lead us up the hill. So to mark the "Down memory Lane" survey trip we stopped here. Have my car there at the signage for a souvenir shot

30. State Park Building

The largest and most elaborate Park Office that I have seen after being to so many State Parks in Peninsula Malaysia and Thailand

31.  Map! Around Muka Head - Canopy Walk Closed

Details of the features and amenities for Penang State Park. Interesting map with good details

32. Park Signage

My habit! To show I have being there

33. Short Jetty - broken?

Took a short walk up the Jetty

34. Teluk Bahang Bay

Beautiful scene and calm waters

35 Hi! Don't go anymore further

This is as far out as we were allowed to walk - by the daughter

Actually we should follow this type of exercise of recording more often

Each time in our conversation, we seem to lack details when describing a certain destination. If we had and better still compiled our visit with pictures, collectively we could have a very well painted pictures. This trip is a typical example, nothing exciting, nothing new and nothing interesting. But the whole trip itself tells so much about Penang in the awakening after the lock down process.

An example, we were moaning about the esplanade being closed for more than 2 years and yet to be finished. By the time I completed tis page, the new seafront for walking was opened weeks ago!.
