Week 51 - 26th December '99
Visit your "friend's" Farm in Cameron Highlands
So it was time to play tourist guide! Into Cameron Highlands. |
First stop was the Tea Plantation and the beautiful valleys. Terraced plots with straight lines. Then the poor and badly tramped on path at the Mossy Forest. What a let down for those expecting to see "Fantasy Land" with mist drifting by! |
Our "Host", a couple in their early 70's looked sixty. They had a farm, somewhere off the beaten track. They wanted to show us that. They too owned some apartments which were for rental on a daily basis. why not? We took one lot where the whole family bunked in. Oh it was December, Week 51, as you can see. the northern "winter" season and it was cold. Very cold in the night. You could see the misty morning of the valley where we drove out of Tanah Rata to Tringkap where the couple stayed.

The tour continues with journey into Kampong Raja, the Blue valley and beyond. This time, dust and dirt along created by the road constructions, the sight of endless stretches of barren lands was definitely a curse. Especially for those contemplating or looking forward to exotic panoramic sight. Get the feeling? From the town a narrow side lane opened up into a main Farm Road. It is a well paved road of 2/3 kms deep into one of the valleys. |
Coming from and getting away from the maddening crowd, to be met by same sickening scenes of land degradation. It was lucky that an earlier visit to the touristy Cactus Garden brought back some confidence in my family members The modern farming method - plastic shelters to filters the strong sunlight. Inducing sort of under shade temperature. Keeping under control damages from the undesired heavy down pours.Summing up - control temperature, dampness and acid rain. These sheds brought about another sight. One that looked like sheds taken over the looks of most valley's floor space. A view here of the green forested valley and the intrusion by sheds. |
Here the "visitors" had a field day. Now sorting
out their "loots" The farm beside being a production line, had the right environment for all types of plants/vegetables to thrive. They separately farmed for their own needs. Alleys, strip of lands, edges, fencing These random cultivation allow the farm hands, owners and visitors alike to meet their demand for good fresh vegetables. For us, one of the bye products was the "Dragon Beard" This was a cover crop. Sort of creepers with gourds. The young shots started life with many tendrils. We were coerced into trying out these tender shoots. Well, it tasted good, like any other grown vegetables. In the highlands, the "Dragon Beard" creepers were providing covers for slopes, sun shades for plots of land with newly planted vegetables.. |
The trip would be not be complete without a group photographers. Good that we did that. Now to rekindle fond memories. Look at the smiling faces, must be a group of happy customers. Guess how old were the owners, Mr. Yong? The couple on the far left! |
The stretch of road, Brinchang - Kampong Raja, was under construction. After the cars had passed through, efforts had to be invested to prepare the cars for the "civilized" world. Those frequent travellers to Cameron would remember the location of this tiny waterfall. Sometimes hardly visible but on this day, plenty of water Everybody got down to work. I was distracted by a unusual looking Robin. Spending time watching it slowly disappeared among the cliff. |
Was a trip every one enjoyed tremendously, the evenings and the farm outings. Apart from some attraction at the cacti garden and tea plantations, you have to be sure what are you expecting out of this highlands resort. |
