86 PASSERIFORMES: Leiothrichidae

Laughingthrush

The family *Leiotrichidae* is a group of passerine birds notably known for the Laughingthrushes and their allies. This family is part of the larger superfamily *Sylvioidea* and most birds are found in Asia, with a distribution ranging from the Indian subcontinent to Southeast Asia and parts of China. The Leiotrichidae family is known for its social, often noisy, and highly vocal birds, which are typically found in forested or scrubland habitats.
The birds are generally medium-sized birds with strong legs and feet, adapted for terrestrial foraging. They often have soft, fluffy plumage, and many species exhibit striking patterns or colors, such as rufous, gray, or olive tones, with some having distinctive facial markings or crests.

Laughingthrushes as a species are widespread and relatively common, but there are also quite few which are threatened by habitat loss due to deforestation and human encroachment. Conservation efforts are crucial for protecting their natural habitats and ensuring their survival. Particularly treasured in Malaysia are the Mesias and the the visiting Cutias
