Greater Painted Snipe

Rostratula benghalensis

The Greater Painted Snipe () is not considered part of the regular snipe family (Scolopacidae) due to several key differences in its biology, behavior, and taxonomy. Here's why:

1. Classification
- The Greater Painted Snipe belongs to the family *Rostratulidae*, which is distinct from the Scolopacidae family that includes true snipes, sandpipers, and other shorebirds.
- Genetic and morphological studies have shown that the Greater Painted Snipe is more closely related to jacanas and other wading birds than to true snipes.

2. Behavior pattern
- *Sexual Dimorphism*: In Greater Painted Snipes, females are more brightly colored than males, which is unusual among wading birds. In true snipes, males and females generally look similar.
- *Breeding Behavior*: Greater Painted Snipes exhibit role reversal in breeding behavior, where females compete for males, and males incubate the eggs and care for the young. This is not seen in true snipes.
- *Habitat and Feeding*: While both groups inhabit wetlands, Greater Painted Snipes tend to forage in shallow water and muddy areas, whereas true snipes are more often found in marshes and wet grasslands, probing deeply into the soil for food.
