Scaly-breasted Bulbul
|
Diagnostic markings :- 15 cm. This is one Bulbul that many birders would like to meet up with. Seen only in fruiting or flowering season. Very small for a bulbul [1] White colored scale on breast and flank [2] Black head and white throat. Upper part olive yellow with under tail yellow ending with black tail and edge at the tip -white,
Distribution :- This bird is native to South Thailand & Peninsula Malaysia. The bird is seen seasonal with the fruiting trees. In other times, quite difficult to spot them. Appearances is predicable and consistent. Habitats and preferences :- This may be the smallest of Bulbul. It does not appear that small from a distance. A fairly easy bird to ID. The Scaly-breasted Bulbul is a bird of the hills. Not the top of low hills but rather lower slopes of mountain. Prefers the upper storey and feeding on flowering and fruiting trees. Upon seeing the bird, you may not be able to straightway ID the bird as the Scaly-breasted at the first glance. On the second look, it is easy with the white scaly breast. Typical of Bulbuls, a brown bird with bright yellow, then spot the white throat. I had only a couple of occasions did see the bird singly. Most of my encounters, they tend to feed in group as all the birds zero in on that fruiting tree in the area. yes, they do feed as a group but also widely scattered within the tree and then a couple of birds may be at different tree. That was when there were more than one tree of the same species fruiting.
