Malaysian Birds

 Black Hornbill

Size & diagnostic markings:-76 cm.  The slim bodied Hornbill is only 76 cm long. Considered small for a Hornbill.  The bird is black throughout, the upper part and the lower part. It has broad white-tipped outer tail, the yellowish-white casque is unmarked.  The facial skin is black and a dull colored gray supercilium is suppose to be visible. The female bird has patches of pinkish moustachial patches

Distribution :-  Black Hornbills are resident in Sumatra and the Borneo Islands. Common Hornbill in deep forest in Peninsula Malaysia

Habitats & preferences:- This is a lowland forest bird, as usual in pristine forest with tall and large trees

Like all Hornbills , the Black Hornbill makes long continuous calls and it is easy to locate where the calls are coming from. However, most times the bird remains well hidden among the foliages. Furthermore such trees are also those at the peak of low hills hidden in most part by other trees in the lower level. All in all, I find it near impossible to locate the nearby bird until it takes off to the next destination or situation when there is a pair horse playing.

Most of my encounters were in Kuala Ganda and also near Raub. Each time the bird was always so far away. Not until this bird, a left over from the Kota Damansara Forest which once spread until Kuang, This birds after years of isolation was quite urbanised. Got my pictures easily in Rimba Kiara
