Malaysian Birds - Rhinoceros Hornbill

Size & diagnostic markings:- 120 cm This Hornbill varies in sizes from 90-120 cm. An expectedly large bird with bright red and orange up curved casque. Then almost white to pale yellow bill, eye reddish. The bird is mostly black with the rear part of belly white extending all the way to the under tail. The whole tail is white with a broad black band across the centre

Distribution :-  This is a bird of the Greater Sundas.  Resident in southern Thailand to Peninsula Malaysia. Quite a common Hornbill to be seen in Peninsula Malaysia

Habitats & preferences:- This is a bird of the lowland forest usually roaming around in pairs and sometimes could gather in flocks. Being large birds, it prefers forest with tall trees or undulating low hills where it can have a panoramic view. Among all the Hornbills and excluding the Oriental Pied Hornbill, this Rhinoceros Hornbill is rather easy to meet up with. Most days it would be seen flying across the valleys of Genting Highlands. Other places where the bird is frequently seen would be the Lake Garden in Taiping. Years ago there was flock of 12-15 birds in the hills in Langkawi. Lately the birds could still be detected but obvious showing dramatically reduced

So far, my luck in meeting up with this bird were exceptionally good. All the pictures here were taken in Taiping Lake Garden. having met up with the birds very often. They came to the low trees along the road surrounding the lake.
