Birds in my garden

 Brown-throated Sunbird

The presence of this bird in the area is alerted by its monotonous single tone incessant call. This time, though the female appears plain and familiar in looks with other female Sunbirds but watch for the broken pale yellow eye ring.

The bird may appear slightly broader at 14 cm long has a distinctive dull brown throat and side and not influenced by lightings. Then the lower part, also non reflective, of strong yellow. That makes ID much quicker. The bird is resident to the greater Sundas and surrounding Islands, is also a bird seen throughout the year in Malaysia.

This is a lowland bird of the forest edge, very common in mangrove forest and also in urban parks. Easy to tell apart from the other Olive-backed Sunbird common in our gardens. The repetitive closely linked single note call and which is very loud is the signal that the bird is present in the area.

Size & diagnostic markings:- The Brown-throated is 14 cm long with the squarish tail and the more roundish looking body. It is glossy dark green and purple on the upper part and dull brown throat then a bright yellow under part. The iridescent part on this bird is the purple on the shoulder patch and plus small patch of maroon-chestnut on the wings.

Above:- All the shades nicely shown here. Below:- Other times one big blob of dark coloured bird

-

Now a female.

-

This is a full adult, protesting that I am taking its pictures.

-

OK! getting agressive too

-

The bird uses its beak to open up the petals, before getting its long tongue to reach the bottom.

-

Yes! Got it in full view and the proper angle

There it goes again, forcing open the petals

-

Now a shot of the bird's back view

-

oops! a  good shots, but what wrong with its forehead.

This picture taken in my garden. Again in bright sunlight, the gloss stands out but not the colour

Finally that "brown" throat.

Habitats & preferences:-This is a lowland bird and visiting trees in the park and also flowering trees in our garden

In Malaysia, where can the bird be found:- The bird prefers tall trees on the road sides and in the park, it will be moving among braches in the middle to the upper storey. Hardly comes down to the scrubs. In my house, contary to what was written just, the bird is a regular on the flowering scrubs on ground level.
