Buffed-necked Woodpecker
|
Size & diagnostic markings:- 21 cm. The Buff-necked at 21 cm is much bigger than the Buff-rumped. Most significant on this bird is the strong pale color patch on the neck. Though not a large patch but critical to tell this bird apart from the Buff-rumped. Then the red sub-moustachial strip is much longer and prominent. The female do not have the red stripe. Distribution :- This bird is the resident for Sumatra and Borneo Island. It is a fairly common bird in Malaysia. Habitats & preferences:- This is a lowland forest Woodpecker that prefers thick forest. Hunting in the lower and middle storey. Moving up and down vertical trunks. My first encounter with the Buff-necked Woodpecker was years ago when I was alerted by a medium size bird on top of a low shrub. It was so near and just beside me that I did not have time to make an ID. With the pictures, I confirmed that it was in fact a Woodpecker at eye level making some very un-Woodpecker like action. That was the first time for me to see the Buff-necked at the forest edge in Rengit. The pictures posted on this page was from a visit when I saw this Buff-necked again. This time beside the trail to the Canopy Walk in Taman Negara. That was a pair of them. After these couple of times, sighting were more frequent and easy. Like another encounter in Rengit where I met up with a family of 3 birds. Some pictures were taken off a lone bird in FRIM. Once more, this is a forest bird, more inside the forest and seldom seen in forest edge. On all occasions the birds spent more time in the lower storey. They were extremely shy bird. I suppose spending most of their time in forest with little outside intrusion, they not very attentive creature. Most of my encounters were by chance with the birds extremely close. On all sightings, the birds were not part of a bird wave. This is a Woodpecker native to the islands of Sumatra and Borneo and in no where mentioned about migratory. For ID, this series show distinctly the important marking. Photographs show the sharply contrasting pale buff patch on the neck.
