The Medang Waterfalls

The Pertak Picnic Area

The government after took over the Pertak Valley and converted the Valley into a Dam to store water. Those displaced Orang Asli who were staying inside the valley were given an alternative site for their permanent home. A small settlement on a the slopes of hill on the western slope Today it's Kampong Gerachi.

On another front, the Government worked to replace recreation site inside the previously Pertak Valley. They selected the new recreation area at one spot on the upstream stretch of the Pertak River.  After years of uses age and by words of mouth this place has slowly become accepted and by now has become immensely popular. This is the story for this page

Just around the Dam area there are these 2 Orang Asli settlements. For the Pertak picnic area, make a turn into Pertal Village

After passing through the village proper, at the edge, this guard house is seen. They levied a toll of Rgt1 per pax. This is a picture showing my car leaving the area of the Waterfalls.

From the toll collection point, a nice drive of about a kilometer with forest fringes, actually made up of bamboo clumps as the road running beside river

Then the spacious car park, also on paved land - this one river side

And more parking space on the forest side as well.

At the time during the turn of the millennium, we, meaning - me and friends had a strange pastime of hunting for Waterfalls. Now myself out of circulation for some time from that circle is not aware of the concurrent trend. But gauging from some postings on internet that fad is gone. Anyway for this destination there is one major fall The Medang Fall, plus a couple of obscure waterfalls The location of the Medang Falls  is 6kms walk one way from the Pertak picnic area. A walk which would take about 2 hours on foot single way. From the picture can see that it is fairly high Waterfall but sadly not a vertical drop. If you are game for jungle trekking, then it is good walk on well defined track on level ground with a couple of low saddles. I am no longer having this fancy, so if you ask me, I would opt to stay and utilize the provided picnic area is far more superior for an outing.

Anyway, this is the start of the track to the Medang Waterfall. Yes, this part is broad. After the bridge the track narrows down to the usual jungle trail style.

A closer look at the main Waterfall - I would rate it as medium height

There is a possibility to go by the side, to reach the top of the waterfall for a nice view of the valley i.e. tree tops.

Sorry! that's all I could elaborate on the fall and the tracking in. Then switch back to the picnic area. What attracted me most at this place is the gathering of Raja Brooke's butterflies and the couple of Grey wagtail birds.

Don't be disappointed if you did not get the huge kaleidoscope. Me, too. On other trips, when I was there only a pair appeared as shown below

During the better days, these butterflies would gather in 2 kaleidoscopes and remained still for a good while to draw up whatever minerals they need from the rock crevices. However if they are not doing that, the pair I saw kept hovering and seeking out potentials. Just to momentarily dipped and up again.

From the butterflies back to my main points - the picnic area. first there is what one may called a small waterfall. Yes the roar generated and also some mist around the area. Then the pool in front of the "Fall"

The same scene taken from another spot

And after the pool area, the river slows down and at the same time the depth of water is not that formidable.

What attracted me was the color of the water, shades of emerald like those in water reservoir. Showing how clear these water from the mountain could have being.

Taken from a spot closer to the water, the place is simply enchanting

Here iis a view of the downstream segment where the river getting away from the picnic area.

I have not explored the whole length of the river bank, before the car park and after. I am sure there are short trails all along the bank where visitors had seek out the secluded spots to be away from the weekend crowds.
