Diamond Head: A Journey Through History and Memory
Known as Lēʻahi in Hawaiian, Diamond Head was named "Diamond Hill" by British sailors in 1825, who mistook the glistening volcanic calcite crystals in the sand for diamonds. This interpretation also inspired the local name "Kaimana Hill." Diamond Head holds a special place in popular culture as well. Steven Jack McGarrett, the fictional protagonist of the iconic Hawaii Five-O television series created by Leonard Freeman, worked near its base. McGarrett, a former U.S. Navy officer leading a special state police task force called Five-O, became a symbol of justice and resilience in Hawaii. Originally portrayed by Jack Lord (1968–1980) and later by Alex O'Loughlin (2010–2020), McGarrett often partnered with Detective Danny "Danno" Williams. The Hawaii Film Studios, located at the foot of Diamond Head Crater, served as the show’s production home, with many scenes featuring the breathtaking views from Diamond Head Lookout. For those who remember Hawaii Five-O, Diamond Head embodies an exotic allure and stands as an icon in the landscape of Honolulu. My own hike to Diamond Head felt like fulfilling a lifelong dream, especially after having watched the series during the 1960s. Arriving in Honolulu, the idea of reaching this "Mecca" of Hawaiian pop culture and natural beauty became an unforgettable experience. Diamond Head Crater is located about 1.5 miles from Waikiki Beach and can be easily accessed by bus to its base. The summit, which sits at 560 feet, offers a scenic and manageable climb, starting with a gentle slope that leads to two sets of staircases closer to the top. These staircases, totaling 175 steps, are partially shaded and assist hikers on their ascent. It’s essential to plan ahead by reserving a Park Entry Ticket online at least three days in advance, as there is no walk-in option. |
