Chiang Mai

Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden

This Queen Sirkit Botanical garden is located 20 minutes north of Chiang Mai city. it is positioned to be among the forest hills along that winding country road coming from Samoeng. The Park was opened in 1992. This oasis of information has become a center that is internationally recognized for research on plant-related services between biodiversity and environmental conservation.

The garden is set inside a valley surrounded by natural rain forest hills. For a casual visitor there are plenty of choices like waling through flower gardens, banana path or even enter the many green houses e.g. there would be the Savanna House, Orchid House, Carnivorous plant House and one greenhouse on Ferns. There is also a 400 meters long Canopy Walkway. Allowing a different view of the garden from a high perspective of the spots below. There was no need to be concerned about walking distances. Shuttle bus is available making stops at various points of interest. So if you have your own transport, take time to a stop over for souvenir shop and also a canteen for coffee breaks, For those unfamiliar to this type of outings, budget around around 3 hours for a leisure walk. Those who loves garden and nature - it's up to you then.

The concept, the layout and overall planning is very impressive. In fact the amenities and facilities in the park was overwhelmingly good. The first point to comment was be the name for the Park, Queen Sirikit - giving the place some expectation of a royal standard. For the average person on the street, the collections of plants and what is incorporated within is fairly widespread and exceed the scope of an average gardener. With that high standing status and comparing with better known gardens, the plants and collection was somewhat mundane. A much enlarged version of my own garden. Which is nothing! What is needed - a place with plants and collection that I would never have dreamt of.

One example - the Canopy Walk. very sturdy and broad having seen other canopy Walks, normally very high and exotic. This one at 400 meters long and the environment is cursory. Counting the number of tours coming to this place and the relatively lack of Caucasians speaks a lot about its popularity.

Given a chance, I would go back to the place. In this part of the world hardly we couldn't think of another park that is this organised.
