Chiang Mai

The Chedis in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is an ancient city. Glorious days and war torn days, the city had seen over the centuries. The people then had left behind traces of the many of the good stuffs like Temples shrines, buildings and Chedi. Over time, their important purposes  were left the elements of the weather and the here says passed down from generation to generation were left faded.

When I was in Chiang Mai I came across an article which highlighted to his fact .The Subject - very abstract and unusual - Chedi

I made it a point to do my own collection in pictures. Pity or rather tedious I do could not jolt down this info related to each and every Chedi. Tried as I could, the general knowledge on the internet do not cover that many Chedis apart from those couple whic were better known and visited. So I should be contended with just a collection of pictures.

Anyway to satrt this page I cannot say I cannot remember or identify any Chedi because that this one that stands out among the rest within its name on everyone lips. The Wat Chedi Luang

The Chedis Of Chiang Mai

Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) was built sometime between 1385 and 1402. This was during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, the 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty. This building or momnument remains the icon and is a distinctive feature of the Chiang Mai skyline.

At its peak, the chedi measured 60 metres across at the square base and 80 metres tall and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred religious relic!

Today the ruined bricks chedi of Wat Chedi Luang now rises to about 60m in height. Its base is 44m (144 ft.) wide. It has four sides, each with a niche approached by a monumental stairway guarded by stone nagas (mythical snakes). Prominently, Elephants stand guard midway up the platform.
