Tachilek

Tachileik, located in the infamous Golden Triangle, is a border gateway to the town of Mae Sai in Thailand, and is mainly used by tourists as an access point to get to Kyaing Tong. A car and driver for the four hour journey will cost around USD70 one way. Then there are also cycling trips with car escort are also be arranged..
It's not uncommon for Thais to cross the border from Thailand to Tachileik for gambling, to buy counterfeit goods or use the region's only golf course.

The primary currency used in Tachileik is Thai baht – although Myanmar kyat and US dollars are also accepted. You have to be there to feel the mood

For those who are looking for something strange or slightly suspect, head to the Tachileik market. This outdoor bazaar is bustling with venders, hawkers and border-hopping. Thais in search of a bargain and the market offered everything from cheap knickknacks, counterfeit textiles, booze and cigarettes to guns, knives, and rare-animals. Keep your wits about you as negotiation is essential and the merchants are street wise

The Tachileik border crossing is located near Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, some 250km north of Chiang Mai. Crossing overland at Mae Sai border is a popular border run from Thailand, as you can enter into Myanmar without a visa if you are entering back into Thailand on the same day.

Location-wise, the close proximity of Mae Sai to Chiang Mai makes the border crossing a convenient visa run for travellers in Thailand. And so in theory, popping over the border into Myanmar for the day in order to be stamped in and out of Thailand is reasonably straightforward.

However, the method to handle visa runs between Thailand and Myanmar is very fluid. It could be  that is subjected to change at short notice. So often there are conflicting information. So better read and confirm the latest trend online. Confirm that this border crossing is possible at the time of your visit.

Well, for me. I was in Northern Thailand - simple why not? A chance to touch your feet onto Burmese soil, and satisfied our curiosity about food or culture in Myanmar. If you need to collect stamping marks on your passport, the Mae Sai to Tachileik crossing is a good opportunity
