Krabi The Fossil Beach This is how the approach to this touristy site looks like. By now the novelty of the places had diminished.
The Fossil Beach There are only 3 such sites in the world. The other two - one in Japan and another in the US. Susan Hoi as this place is also known is the only coastal site.
The Fossil Beach
The Fossil Beach Su-saan Hawy [shell cemetry] In simpler words "Susan-Hoi". Giant slabs jutting out to sea. Millions of small invertebrate creatures known as gastropod snails inhabited the waters. Over the years, the shells compacted and piled up and becomes layers according to seasons. Of the four species, viviparus appeared to be most numerous
The Fossil Beach There were quite a few trees of this melon like fruits - Crescentia cujete fruits serving as ornamental plants. Most parts of the fruit are poisonous. Chinese believe it to be a good cure for all types of cancer. Native to Central and South Americas. Used as food and medicines.
The Fossil Beach Sorry - I have added in pictures from various otuings and groups. This one? My Kiara Bunch! On the so-called beach
The Fossil Beach There were 3 types of site in this location. This is location 3 clearly seen at very low tides. The shelves are up to 3 meters thick. Look carefully, stubby snails, long snails and bivalves are clearly visible
The Fossil Beach The "Fossil Beach" is not only confined to he small plot at the Visitors Center but stretches some distances as the background pictures shows.
The Fossil Beach Here too, the thickness plus the layers are well defined. The nicest fact is that formation was at its earliest stage
The Fossil Beach Here are the layers formed with each season. The second most common fossils are bivalves, the mollusk family which includes clams, mussels and oysters.
The Fossil Beach Microscopic relics tell us that shells here are between 40 to 50 millions years old

Actually this visit here is not learning about the type shells that existed here once. More - to see physical evidences how the layers created by annual yearly sessions are compressed. The early stage in the formation of limestone. Later these slaps would be up heaved by earth movements to be transformed into low mountains.
