WK Restaurant - Ulu Yam Baharu
Lots has been said about Loh Mee being popularised by people from Ulu Yam! Where is this place Ulu Yam? It is 39.3 km from KL, About a 40 minutes drive out of town to the north. But there are 2 Ulu Yam Township. One an ancient old township, more or less abandoned by many young inhabitants and a thriving new township where people from nearby villages rush there to open business related to food. These 2 township known as Ulu Yam Lama and Ulu Yam Baharu are about 10 km apart. I will show briefly highlights some features The Tale of 2 Ulu Yams 1. Ulu Yam Lama #1 To reach Ulu Yam - turn off from Highway 1 Barely one kilometer from the junction, passing over a railway bridge could see the township below the bridge. Reach this junction. Sorry - no signage to show the right turn into town or signage for the town.
#2 On the way out from Ulu Yam Lama This time, the signage towards Ulu Yam Baharu is clearly shown. So what is your feelings about the authority in charge town planning.
#3 A very nice updated Chinese Medium school I suppose all all the children from the hinterland need coming back to this old town for their schooling. Definately not from this sleepy town alone.
#4 Antique and abandoned Police station Only those whostayed here long enough could remember this fact
#5 The present day looks of Ulu Yam Lama Single story residential house and shop lots of wooden planks
#6 Guan Kee - the real McCoy of "Loh Mee" With internet and media, few shops had claimed the title of original Loh Mee. This guy which I patronise from their start of business can only says that they are the longest in business.
2. Ulu Yam Baharu #7 Only one road This is the mono carriage road hugging the Sendat River to go inland towards Ulu Yam Baharu
#8 Town Centre The Junction where the road to Genting Highlands meets with the town
#9 The looks of Ulu Yam Baharu township Quite a change when comparing with Ulu Yam Lama
3. Our pick for lunch #10 At the edge and out of town - WK Fish Head Curry Restaurant View from the turn off going to KL
#11 Frontage on a rest day Restaurant closed on every Monday and Tuesday
#12 Scene of our lunch Usually packed with visitors going up and coming down from Genting Highlands. A good "watering hole" where food is good and prices very competitive.
#13 WK Restaurant with crowds Now out of town crowds are flocking to this shop on weekends and public holiday. Avoid these rushes
#15 Offer - "Butter Cakes" Some souvenirs to bring home too.
#16 Top Choice and niche Curry Fish head! Avoid that and ask for fish meat instead
#17 Stewed Pork belly meat Small serving - enough and delicious
#18 My favourite Large Prawns in thick coconut curry Never had any adverse remarks so far
#19 This is a condiment dish to complete the set Few options but all are acceptable Simple fired stuff
4. Contender & Competitors #20 Hock Lay Very prominent on the internet - with strong recommendation
#21 Aik Khoon - next in line - 3rd position Look at the right neighbour - Fook Lok sound alike to Hock Lay in cantonese
#22 Within stone throw - WK is Hock Loy Name in Chinese identical to Hock Lai. For new comers, they would make beeline to name that sounded familiar
The last part is extremely interesting as there is a clamour among KL Folks to make beeline for Ulu Yam. To be honest on weekends all of them very crowded and filled. Forget about the nitty gritty of names. Lucky to get a seat and having food served. |
