Choy Kee "Pork Knuckle" - Sungkai

We found this place by ourselves, years ago after hearing about Sungkai. That was the old and original shop in the heart of this one street town. We patronized quite often. Remember the old man and the daughter serving us then

Later, we were surprised that it had shifted to a new corner shop lot of a new housing area, just out of town. Came to know that February 2010, the old man had passed way and that the new owner took over the place. We do not know the owner that well too ascertained was it that the new owner shifted to this ne place.

The niche of this place was the designer Pork knuckle - it was gigantic despite the hand design by the lady boss when enquired about the size. Standard she said.. and it was too big. Anyhow the sauce had a nice touch of herbals without being too thick, while the meat was done just right without the piggy smell. I guess everyone has their own style of making this dish.

Next-ikan terubok - many especially Boon Chee coming to this restaurant and rightly so for this dish. Till now I have no clue as its exclusivetivity and taste. But I Know that you can literally eat the meat and the bones together. The sauce had a touch of herbs with spiciness from the dried chilly. But when you squeezed the kalamansi onto the fish and the sauce, it changed the whole dish completely.

"Chai boey" or Chop Suey - sour & spicy vegetable, then the Tou Foo - her signature dish of tofu (bean curd) with minced meat toppings was a simple, yet very delicious dish. The tofu is homemade, with egg, Japanese tofu, but very smooth and soft. There are a couple of specialties The Yau Mak (Romaine lettuce?) cooked with Fu Yiu (fermented bean curd) was thankfully not too saltish, and right up our alley. The Marmite chicken’s serving was a bit lacking, though equally good in terms of taste.

Only lately found another eating shop in Slim River serving equivalent which I am also happy with.
