Malaysian Birds

 Mugimaki Flycatcher

Size & diagnostic markings:- 13.5 Cm. This is a migratory bird wintering in Malaysia during the year end months. This is the most sighted among all wintering Flycatchers. The Mugimaki is a bulkier bird at 13.5 cm long. The upper part is in dark color with the white supercilium and white dash at the wing. The throat is bright rufous-orange leaving the rest of the under part in white

Distribution :-  The bird is from far north and northern China, wintering in the Greater Sundas and the Philippines.

Habitats & preferences:- This is a sub-montane forest bird but prefers forest edge and some open ground

The Mugimaki Flycatcher is also more that 13 cm. The bird's trace back to the far north and north eastern China, coming a long way to the Greater Sundas as well as Malaysia for wintering.

Coming from the cold this obviously is a montane bird which also do choose the warmer mountains of Bukit Tinggi and Fraser Hills as well.

Very distinctive bird and easy to recognize. This bird prefers the lower levels of forest or staying within scrubs, although not returning to the same perch after each take-off but hang around as very tight small area. Another point to note is that the bird, most likely from the same brood return to the same spot each year.

The way my photos were showing the birds do says a lot about the bird's attitude. Most pictures were made in Bukit Tinggi where the male was a very co-operative model but the female was not. For the pictures on the female, she was readily available and less cautious with the presence of human in Ulu kali, a climate more suited for the birds.

Another very co-operative model. This is a better loved bird, it stayed on the same branch or almost near by varying its perched position. Same time, the female was almost nearby in the same vicinity though not close to where the males were.
