Waterfalls
In Trang
Yes!
That's it. This is the rudimentary map from the Thai
tourist department that triggers as well set me of on a
wild goose chase in Trang. |
Looking
back after the many years that had gone by, now I am
collecting my 2nd round of rewards. Those early days
hunting for waterfalls in Thailand was not an
adventurous trip but a pioneering venture in each and
every one of them.
A venture
in order to be successful must have a dedicated leader
aided by a team of enthusiastic supporters. For me it
was done alone with an classic old car or in better
times with my daughter Jackie or partner Joyce. Very
enthusiastic and out going person too. Thank You to
both.
In the
land where we do not read Thai or understand spoken
language, we used our fingers and one word "amok". There
were public known waterfalls in meticulously kept forest
park and there were also jungle falls known to the only
he locals. |

We were
there for the "Waterfalls" This is a field research
station capitalising on the pristine tropical forest
environment, Only university students and researchers
would be there |
# 7 Picture
Khao Chong Botanical Garden #
Today - it
is h=named as as "Botanical garden" not really.
Everything is status -quo. the entrance upgraded and the
park area transformed into a picnic destination for the
public. |

This is
the original Khao Chong Waterfall that went for. |
# 9 Picture Khao Chong Botanical Garden #
Along the
same river, they had opened up a better spot further
upstream with real cascade and also given the place a
new name |

Now the
real "Waterfalls" |
Part 2 - Sai Rung Waterfalls
# 11 Picture
The Sai Rung Waterfall #
This was
the type of signage that urged us on - Let's go
waterfalls Hunters. Distances clearly shown. With such
signage we couldn't be wrong or difficult to find. |
Road sign above - the old and
traditional Gen 1 signage.
# 12 Picture
The Sai Rung Waterfall #
Oh! This
was the Gen 2 waterfalls signage. it showed how keen it
was at that time the Thai Govt was promoting
"Waterfalls" as a destination. With such modern signage
and minutes later assured by the well kept paved road.
getting to the waterfall would be like eating aa piece
of cake. |
# 13 Picture
The Sai Rung Waterfall #
Yes!
found it. A souvenir picture and what the sign sys?
Recognise the first few letters "Nam tok"
|

To
waterfall hunters. this is the most real and beautiful
waterfall. Almost 100 feet of a single drop. Picture

The Sai Rung Waterfall #
Oh! the

Many years
forward - today! the sign replaced with a watered down
Gen 1 era signage??? |
# 24 Picture
The Sai Rung Waterfall #
Road going
in was still well kept - by the rubber estate owners?
But the destination taken out from tourist brochures.
Let's say
"abandoned" for farang and picnickers as there are
alternatives. |
Part 3 - Ton Te Waterfalls

The Ton Te Waterfall Directions #
Following
this sign we went forward eagerly looking for the next
"Ton Te" Waterfalls |
#26 Picture
The Ton Te Waterfall #
This is
what the guide books say this the loftiest Waterfall in
the whole of Thailand. Falling 320 meters. Better seen
in the monsoon season at year end. From the picture,
this is one place for hikers. From the car park, only
small trails seen. Not a good idea for me to look after
girls in remote Thaland.
|
#27 Picture
Ton Te Today's Picture #
Oh! Ton Te
Waterfall area had changed. Today beautiful roads and
big signage. Crowds seen here walking in too. |

Ton Te Picnic Spots #
This is
now a picnic area! Not for waterfalls hunters. |
Part 5 - Ton Tok Waterfalls
# 29 Picture
Ton Tok Waterfalls #
The sign
clearly showed - "Enter here" for the Ton Tok
Waterfalls. No! It was a couple of kilometres more into
the belukar area. |
# 30 Picture

From the
background of this picture, this was a catchments area
for freshwater to supply to the locals. Can see the ting

Ton Tok Waterfalls Car Park #
A proper car park was
built
The
waterfalls posted up are the few I picked up from the
map of the Tourists Department and luckily their
location were all very well denoted and guided by road
signs also in English.
This an
example where I was guide by just a piece of paper.
|
Up till this day,
Wang Wiset is still a little known hamlet along the Highway 4.
Truck Road
Part 5 - Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls
# 37 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Pan Wang Waterfalls #
Perhaps the most unusual waterfall in
the province is "Roi Chan Phan Wang" literary translated would
be "hundred level-thousands palaces" This place about 70 km north
west of from Wang Wiset township. it's in a little explored corner
of the province surrounded by rubber groves. Here dozens of thin
cascades of water tumble down the limestone rock formation [rimstone
or gours ] into pools below. The entire area is
well shaded and a good popular picnic spot. There is no public
transport to the falls, moreover the road is none too good.
Motorbikes and jeeps would be the best choice of transport.
Based on this type of report I went.
Detective work shows that the only way is country road 4225..
Reaching there, the place was totally remote and not a single soul
for miles
around, to seek for more information. See the pictures, how we had went
off road. This brought out the pioneering spirit. Imagine the joy
when we found it and a tiny signpost in Thai which we couldn't
comprehend.
# 38 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
Really
used the nose to smell out what would appear to be a
waterfall. |
# 39 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
Hard work
paid off! Found a little a sign which should say
something! |
# 40 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
And found
the Gour pool looking type of waterfalls The surrounding
very scenic but wild. |
# 41 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
There were
the waterfalls we found |
# 42 Picture

# 43 Picture

Now these
were better pictures made in subsequent trips. |
# 44 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
The place
tidied up and had the look of a park |
# 45Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
Even a
board walk was installed |
# 46 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
Now a
closer up of that main fall |
# 47 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Phan Wang Waterfalls #
Now many years later in 2019, the place
was much civilized with paved road reaching the waterfall. the
access road 6 kms still without a 4-digit road number yet. That goes
to show that 25 years later, the place had modernised from that
remote jungle look.
The
surroundings of this road had not change much. Rubber
groves as they called it. Meaning a cultivated rubber
trees within a belukar area. |
# 48 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Pan Wang Waterfalls #
Ranger station I presumed |
# 49 Picture
Looking for the Roi Chan Pan Wang Waterfalls #
Yes!
There is a proper car park too.

Stalls -
indicating the patronage of this area. |
Time
passes very quickly these days. Nothing is permanent,
the way how the Thais handled their natural resources
Waterfalls. On this page, 2 waterfalls relocated, 2
waterfalls area upgraded and changed and one remote
Waterfalls has little commercial value. It pleases me to
learn that things are not the same any more and that I
had pictures of the original moods.
Not that
many people behave that odd to go Waterfalls hunting.
With increased population, unexplored spots are rarity,
Only for primitive people who live in era that there are
so few people. they too would be pre-occupied with
making a living and would not think of looking for
adventure.. |
