The Y2K crisis, or the "Year 2000 problem," was a technological and cultural phenomenon that arose in the late 1990s, centered on concerns about the turn of the millennium. When the date was set to change from December 31, 1999, to January 1, 2000, many feared that computer systems worldwide might malfunction. This was due to the way computers had been programmed to handle dates: to save memory, many software programs represented years with just the last two digits (e.g., "99" for 1999). As a result, when 2000 arrived, systems might read "00" as 1900, potentially leading to incorrect calculations, errors, and failures.

Why It Was a Crisis

In the late 20th century, computers were increasingly embedded in critical infrastructure and daily operations across all sectors, including government, finance, utilities, transportation, healthcare, and defense. Many worried that these systems would break down, creating widespread disruption or even catastrophic failures. For instance:

  • Banking and Financial Systems: Interest calculations, banking transactions, and securities processing relied on accurate date computations. An incorrect date could have wreaked havoc on financial records and transactions.

  • Power and Utilities: Utilities such as power plants, water treatment facilities, and telecommunications were computerized and might have experienced operational failures, potentially leading to blackouts and service disruptions.

  • Transportation: Airlines, train systems, and even automobiles that used date-based controls and safety features might malfunction, raising fears of travel-related accidents and chaos.

  • Healthcare: Medical devices and hospital systems that used date calculations could potentially fail, putting patients at risk.

As the year switched from 1998 to 1999, the media was abuzz with concerns about the Y2K bug, and while I didn’t face any imminent threats in my work, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. Watching the frenzy unfold, I paused and thought—why not turn this moment into a personal adventure? With a little foresight, I envisioned making 1999 “My Big Y2K Year” aka my Great Traveling Year and set out to create a memorable project for myself.

An idea quickly surfaced: I could use my travel experiences across the country as the foundation. That’s when I sketched out an ambitious plan — a 52-week journey, one destination each week, that would become a special year-long travelogue. I imagined capturing moments and pictures from each outing and compiling them into a series of stories for what I called my "Big Travel Year." What began as a spark of inspiration soon grew into a meaningful and exciting way to embrace the new millennium!

Decision ? Where to next?
